With a rich history, one tradition claims the city was named for State Senator A.B Florence, who represented Lane County from 1858-1860. North: This area extends north from Heceta Beach Road on the west side of Highway 101, north from Munsel Lake Road on the east side and is sometimes referred to as the North Lakes Area because of the 12 lakes located there. There is one gated neighborhood north of Florence, Southview. Located on a high bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, many of the homes have magnificent long views looking south to the Siuslaw River jetties. It is comprised of more expensive custom homes. In addition to this gated neighborhood, there is a new non-gated subdivision, The Reserve, located a few miles north of the city limits. It is comprised of more modestly priced custom homes. Lots are still available for building, some of which have Heceta Lake views. There is a common area around the lake for walking and a small park with picnic table and gazebo.
